Back when everything was rainbows and unicorns.
What do you think will happen to Betty in the next season?  Will she get over herself and be happy with Henry?  I don’t think so.  She seems increasingly unhappy with the life she’s made for herself.
It’s like her only satisfaction in season 4 has been making Don miserable.  Now that Don is fabulously happy with Meghan, will Betty be able to relax?  Or will she turn into a bitter old woman, ruin another marriage and become a crazy cat lady?
I don’t think she would be inspired to get a job or better herself in any way.  She seems to conform to the mindset of wealthier women of the day, that satisfaction is being a wife and mother.
Oh Betty, I weep for what you were and what you could have been…

The cast toasts the completion of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, 1989

Everyone but Shatner is thinking “Thank GOD we finished this shitty movie stroking his ego, now we can all go back to our mansions and get ready to make a decent movie with a real director.”
Shatner is thinking “Hey, they actually made my movie!  Holy shit!”

On the same day that Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords retired — Gabby, the epitome of class, courage and whose personal tragedy brought together parties on both sides of the aisle — Arizona governor and immigrant hater Jan Brewer stuck her finger in President Obama’s face, all because he took issue with some stupid book she published.
Boy, Republicans really cannot help themselves when it comes to the President.  I guess Brewer went to the Joe Wilson School Of Disrespectfully Pointing Your Finger At Obama And Acting Like A Fucking Dick.

best show ever

“What happened at work today?”

“Well I had a meeting, then lunch with a client, made some copies, had a going-away party for our office meeting, and then Guy got his foot cut off with a lawnmower.  So, just another day at Sterling Cooper…”

AMEN.

Truth. Lots of things about Betty are awful. Lots of things about EVERYONE ON THE SHOW are awful. I mean, except for Sally, but you know. Not everyone can be perfect.

I think it’s because Betty is a mom, and not a very good one either. People don’t seem to give a fuck about Don and the way he treats his children, which is he’s just hardly ever there. The kids are getting each parent from the opposite end of the spectrum: Betty is too strict and immature, and Don is much more permissive and hardly ever comes around because he spends the majority of his time at work or in bed with other women. You could argue all day over which parenting style of those two is worse (I really don’t know), but people always excuse Don and never Betty.
I also think that because Betty is conventionally beautiful, people have a hard time seeing her be so nasty to everyone. She looks exactly like the stereotypical 50-60’s housewife, so we expect the personality that goes along with that. But the entire point of her character is to show that the stereotype we’ve had of housewives back then are complete bullshit, and she embodies the misery that many women were feeling back then when they were to told the only way to feel happy and fulfilled was to get married and have children. Of course now she doesn’t feel that way and she’s scared of what that means about her and her life, and she’s angry because she did everything she was supposed to and she feels she was screwed over with the perfect-on-the-outside but lying and philandering husband, and now the rebellious daughter.
Anyway, Betty is one of my favorite characters on the show (possibly even ever), not because I actually like or enjoy watching scenes with her character. I just think it’s fascinating to watch her trying to deal with everything while slowly hating herself and everyone else around her more. I used to feel that she was going to join the feminist movement and be fine, but I don’t think that’s going to happen anymore. She’s simply going to be completely left behind.

I’ve never been able to explain why I love Betty, but you just explained it perfectly.

I don’t like her, but I love her character.

Reblogging so you can see this, Meghan! Maybe this will help you verablize what it is about Betty that you don’t like.

Thanks for this— it has some great points.  But I think my biggest problem with Betty now is that I liked her SO MUCH in the beginning when she was a victim, I just wanted her to be held to a higher standard.  She was better than that, and if she just perservered through, she would get what she deserved.  To see her mucking around like everyone else I think is more damaging to her character than anything Don ever did.  I’m disappointed in her because I wanted better for her.
